{"id":3385,"date":"2021-11-10T06:38:20","date_gmt":"2021-11-10T06:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whitehawkassociates.com\/?p=3385"},"modified":"2021-11-22T06:51:40","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T06:51:40","slug":"the-reason-american-has-a-healthcare-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whitehawkassociates.com\/test\/the-reason-american-has-a-healthcare-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"The Reason American Has A Healthcare Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThere can be no solution to the healthcare crisis that does not address America\u2019s unchecked\u00a0 epidemic of chronic disease, which afflicts more than half our citizens and consumes 86% of the\u00a0 exorbitant $3.2 trillion spent each year on care.\u201d<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Clayton Christensen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic disease is the leading cause of death and disability in the U.S. Rates of chronic disease\u00a0 have never been higher, with cost of chronic conditions necessitating the vast majority of healthcare dollars spent. Chronic disease is so common that more than half of U.S. adults have at\u00a0 least one condition, accounting for over 85% of annual healthcare spending.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the World Health Organization, 80% of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes\u00a0 and 40% of cancer could be prevented, primarily with improvements to diet and lifestyle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. spends at least 18% of its GDP ($3.35 trillion in 2019) on health expenditures. If costs\u00a0 continue to rise, by 2050 Medicare and Medicaid alone will account for 20% of the GDP. All\u00a0 projections point to continued rises in chronic disease. If we don\u2019t reverse this trend, we are\u00a0 headed for bankruptcy as a country. The solvency of our nation is at stake.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most widely accepted clinical practice guidelines (promulgated by the American Medical\u00a0 Association, Cleveland Clinic and other authoritative medical organizations) indicate that\u00a0 medications, medical devices and surgeries should be used as treatment for chronic disease <\/span><b><i>only after lifestyle intervention (i.e., correction of diet) first does not yield a satisfactory health\u00a0 outcome<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Practice guidelines state this, because 70 years of research indicate that most cases of\u00a0 chronic disease may be reversed and eliminated (i.e., cured) by correction of diet. In the words\u00a0 of T. Colin Campbell, PhD, one of the world\u2019s foremost authorities on food\u2019s role in the genesis\u00a0 and reversal of chronic disease:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSwitching to a whole-food, plant-based diet with little or no added salt, sugar and fat, produces\u00a0 astounding health benefits. This dietary lifestyle can prevent and even reverse 70% to 80% of\u00a0 existing, symptomatic disease, with an equivalent savings in healthcare costs for those who\u00a0 comply. This treatment effect is broad in scope, exceptionally rapid in response (days to weeks)\u00a0 and often, lifesaving. It cannot be duplicated by animal-based foods, processed foods or drug\u00a0 therapies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite its efficacy, however, lifestyle intervention remains untaught to doctors and unavailable\u00a0 to patients. Prescribed instead is the greatly inferior yet highly profitable treatment modality\u00a0 known as disease management. Designed to render chronic disease livable by medicating its\u00a0 symptoms to mask them, disease management does patients a disservice by lulling them into a <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Christensen, et al. Accessed April 21, 2020.<br \/>\nfalse sense of health, even as their chronic diseases progress into co-morbidity, disability and\u00a0 premature death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite its atrocious outcomes, disease management has long reigned as the de facto medical <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">standard of practice. That\u2019s because it is more than just a treatment modality; it\u2019s a business <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">model\u2014a business model that enriches insurers by ensuring that each chronically diseased <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patient will require greater medical services, for which they may be charged higher insurance <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">premiums, year after year. So successful is the disease-management business model that insurers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are loath to disrupt it by providing coverage for its superior alternative, lifestyle modification. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Were they to do so, patients\u2019 chronic disease would actually abate and disappear, triggering <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reductions in society\u2019s need, and demand for, doctors\u2019 services, hospital stays, prescription <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pharmaceuticals and insurance premiums, which would trigger precipitous drops in earnings for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doctors, hospitals, drug companies and insurers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, this is not the future that the medical industrial complex favors. So, medical schools<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t teach and insurers don\u2019t cover lifestyle modification as treatment for chronic disease. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead they champion disease management. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem with disease management, however, is that it enriches its purveyors at the expense <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of patients. You see, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disease management <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the use of medication, devices or procedures to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">render the unpleasant symptoms of chronic disease tolerable, so that patients may live with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic disease, even as it advances toward co-morbidity, disability and premature death. As <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">backward (i.e., deleterious to health) as that may sound, disease management has been, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remains, the financial mainstay of the healthcare industry, generating over 80% of all healthcare <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revenues. In effect, it enriches doctors, hospitals, drug companies and insurers by turning <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patients into walking annuities that each successive year require greater doctors visits, hospital <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stays and prescription drugs to treat their ever-progressing, yet reversible, chronic diseases. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How lucrative is disease management for doctors, insurers, drug companies, equipment\u00a0 manufacturers and device makers? It\u2019s very lucrative. Each of America\u2019s 132 million<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5,6<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronically diseased persons generates an average of $20,800 in healthcare expenditures every\u00a0 year, making disease management the mother lode of healthcare, a $2.7 trillion business.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7,8<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In sum, this is the reason that doctors, hospitals, drug companies and insurers advocate the use of medications, surgeries and devices as treatment for chronic disease, a health condition whose\u00a0 primary cause is improper diet.
